As per regulations found in the Code of Federal Regulations (43 CFR 8342), the BLM is required to designate motorized routes "based on the protection of the resources of the public lands, the promotion of the safety of all the users of the public lands, and the minimization of conflicts among various uses of the public lands." Nested within the Butte RMP revision, site-specific travel plan alternatives have been developed for five Travel Planning Areas (TPAs) within the Butte Field Office: Helena TPA, East Helena TPA, Lewis and Clark County NW TPA, Boulder/Jefferson City TPA, and Upper Big Hole River TPA. Alternative descriptions, maps, and discussions of environmental consequences of travel plan alternatives are described in the Draft RMP/EIS. Based on public comments and internal review, some modifications have been made to the Preferred Alternative for some TPAs. These changes are depicted in the Proposed RMP/Final EIS.
